This dive site presents the Cristobal Colon, a remarkable shipwreck located off the coast of Bermuda. Built in 1923 for the Transatlantic Spanish Line, this massive vessel – one of the largest shipwrecks in the area – sank in October 1936 after a navigational error. The ship weighed over 10,000 tons and measured nearly 500 feet in length with a beam of 61 feet. At the time of its sinking, it carried 160 crew members, all men, traveling from Cardiff, Wales to Vera Cruz, Mexico, reportedly transporting arms for the Royalists during the Spanish Civil War. The wreck lies approximately eight miles north of North Rock, and was found after Captain Crescencia Navarro Delgado mistakenly identified an offshore communication tower as the Gibbs Hill Lighthouse. This location offers a fascinating glimpse into maritime history and a challenging dive experience. Visibility can vary, but conditions are generally suitable for exploring this grand vessel.
