This dive site, known as Coral Gardens, is nestled on Flynn Reef, an outer reef system located approximately 20 kilometres east of Green Island, off the coast of Cairns, Australia. It offers a classic Great Barrier Reef experience, characterized by vibrant coral formations and consistently excellent visibility close to 30 metres. The site is generally easy to navigate, with a focus on exploring the diverse shallow and medium-depth coral ecosystems.
Divers at Coral Gardens can expect to encounter a rich array of marine life. The site is particularly known for its larger pelagic species, including impressive dogtooth tuna, fast-moving mackerel, and schools of barracuda. Various shark species are also commonly sighted, notably the distinctive whitetip reef sharks, which can often be seen resting or patrolling the reef.
The best time to visit Flynn Reef's Coral Gardens is generally year-round, though the cooler, drier months from June to October offer some of the most comfortable conditions and often the best visibility. Its shallow average depth and excellent visibility make it an ideal location for both beginner divers and snorkelers. Freedivers will also appreciate the accessible depths and abundant marine life.
