This dive site, Cod Hole, located on Ribbon Reef No 10, approximately 96 kilometers north of Cairns, is renowned globally for its resident group of very friendly, large potato cod. These majestic fish, some weighing up to 100 kilograms, have become accustomed to human interaction over the past three decades, creating a unique and unforgettable diving experience. Underwater navigation is typically straightforward, often centered around the main coral bommie where the cod reside, offering easy exploration of the surrounding reef.
The site is a true biodiverse paradise, featuring an abundance of colorful corals and fascinating marine flora. Divers can expect to encounter not only the famous potato cod but also vibrant tropical fish, graceful sea turtles, elusive moray eels, various reef sharks, and impressive manta rays. The rich ecosystem supports a wide array of smaller creatures, contributing to a thriving underwater environment.
The best time to visit Cod Hole is generally during Australia's dry season (May to October) when water visibility is at its peak and conditions are typically calm. This site is excellent for both scuba divers and freedivers due to its relatively shallow depths and abundant marine life. Snorkelers will also find it highly rewarding, experiencing much of the vibrant ecosystem from the surface. Divers should come prepared for incredible wide-angle photography opportunities with the large cod.
