This dive site is the Blacksmiths Western Artificial Reef, a single steel pinnacle tower installed in August 2019. Measuring 7.8m wide and 12m high, it serves as an evolving habitat for marine life. Divers can easily navigate around the solitary structure, observing the colonization process. It represents a proactive effort to enhance local marine ecosystems and provides an interesting focal point for dives.
The reef is expected to attract a variety of fish, including pelagic species like yellowtail kingfish, silver trevally, mulloway, and yellowtail scad, alongside snapper and blue mackerel. As the structure matures, it will likely host a diverse range of invertebrates, algae, and smaller reef fish, contributing to a complex and growing marine community.
The best time to visit will likely be during warmer months when marine activity is typically higher and fish schools are more prevalent. Divers can witness the ongoing process of ecological succession on the artificial structure, making each visit unique. Freedivers will find the 28-meter depth suitable for deeper dives. It's an excellent site to observe fish aggregation and the development of a new reef ecosystem, offering a good opportunity for wide-angle photography.
