This dive site, Caneel Bay, located on the west coast of St. John, offers multiple diverse snorkeling environments including coral reefs, rocky overhangs, and seagrass beds. Although the Caneel Bay Resort was destroyed by hurricanes in 2017 and remains closed, the site is now exclusively accessible by boat. This shallow site, with a maximum depth of 5 meters, allows easy navigation and exploration of its varied underwater topography, making it ideal for relaxed exploration.
Snorkelers and freedivers can expect to encounter a vibrant array of marine life at Caneel Bay. Key attractions include green sea turtles, often found gracefully swimming or grazing in the extensive seagrass beds, and stingrays. The healthy coral reefs and rocky areas provide habitats for dozens of colorful reef fish species, showcasing the richness of the Caribbean's smaller marine inhabitants.
The best time to visit Caneel Bay is generally during the dry season, from December to May, when conditions are typically calmest and visibility is optimal. This site is particularly ideal for snorkelers and freedivers due to its consistently shallow depths and protected bay location. Visitors are advised to bring a waterproof camera to capture the abundant marine life and to practice responsible snorkeling by avoiding contact with corals and marine creatures.
