This dive site features the Kodiak Queen, a remarkable US Navy fuel barge YO-44, which holds the unique distinction of being one of only five ships to survive the attack on Pearl Harbor. Sunk intentionally in the British Virgin Islands in March 2017, it has been repurposed as an artificial reef, creating a vibrant underwater habitat. Divers can easily navigate around the wreck, observing the structure and its emerging ecosystem, with the top of the bow being a common focal point.
Marine life at the Kodiak Queen is flourishing, with Creole Wrasse and Yellowtail Snapper frequently seen schooling around the upper sections of the bow. For divers with a keen eye, the sandy areas below the wreck are home to numerous juveniles and various small crustaceans, making it an excellent spot for macro observation.
The best time to visit the British Virgin Islands, and thus the Kodiak Queen, is generally between December and May when the weather is drier and hurricane risk is low, offering optimal diving conditions. This site is highly recommended for both scuba divers and freedivers due to its relatively shallow average depth, historical significance, and abundant marine life.
