This dive site features the USS Oriskany, a massive 888-foot aircraft carrier intentionally sunk in 2006 to become the world's largest artificial reef, earning it the nickname "The Great Carrier Reef." Sitting upright in a north-south orientation with its bow facing south, the wreck provides divers with an incredible opportunity to explore multiple decks, hangars, and the impressive superstructure. Its sheer size and complexity make it a renowned destination for experienced wreck divers.
Over the years, the Oriskany has been colonized by a vibrant ecosystem, attracting a diverse range of marine life. Divers can expect to encounter large schools of snapper and amberjack, various species of grouper, barracuda, and occasionally pelagic visitors. The wreck itself is adorned with colorful encrusting corals, sponges, and anemones, providing macro opportunities amidst the grand scale of the carrier.
The USS Oriskany is best visited during the warmer months, typically from late spring to early fall, when water temperatures are more comfortable and visibility is generally optimal. Due to its depth, potential for strong currents, and distance from shore, this dive is strictly for advanced divers. Proper training, equipment, excellent fitness, and significant experience in deep and wreck diving are essential for a safe and rewarding exploration of this magnificent artificial reef.
