This dive site, the Tex Edwards Barge, is a popular wreck destination roughly 7 miles east of Pensacola Pass. Sunk in 1982, the barge rests at a maximum depth of 23 meters, with an average depth around 11 meters. Despite some subsidence over the years, significant sections of the wreck remain intact, offering diverse structures and large overhangs for divers to explore.
The Tex Edwards Barge acts as an artificial reef, attracting a wide variety of sea life. Divers can expect to encounter various reef fish, including snappers and groupers, as well as smaller invertebrates thriving in and around the wreck's crevices and overhangs. Barracuda and other pelagic species may also be observed cruising the perimeter.
The site is accessible to all levels of recreational divers, making it an excellent choice for open water certified divers and above. The best time to visit for optimal conditions on the Gulf Coast is typically late spring through early fall. Freedivers can also enjoy the site, exploring the shallower sections and outer structure.
