This dive site, Rocky Top, is a vibrant patch reef located just off the shore of Islamorada in the Florida Keys. The reef top sits around 15 feet (4 meters), descending to a sandy bottom at 20-25 feet (6-7.5 meters). It's equipped with a mooring ball, simplifying boat access. While there's no specific historical narrative provided, its reputation as one of the healthiest coral sites in the Upper Keys speaks to its ecological significance and continuous health. It's an easy navigation site, suitable for all skill levels.
Rocky Top boasts an incredibly rich marine ecosystem, home to thousands of fish, diverse coral species, and larger marine life. Divers can expect to encounter sea turtles, including a resident green turtle, as well as various sharks and rays. Large schools of tomtates and small mouth grunts are commonly seen, adding to the site's vibrant fish population, making it a bustling underwater environment.
The site is suitable for divers of all levels, including snorkelers and freedivers, thanks to its shallow depths. The Florida Keys offer excellent diving conditions year-round, but summer months (June-August) typically bring the warmest water and calmest seas. Winter (December-February) can see cooler water temperatures but often excellent visibility. Given its shallow nature and abundant life, it's perfect for extended bottom times and photography.
