Mermet Springs, located in Southern Illinois, is an 8.5-acre spring-fed quarry offering a unique and full-service freshwater diving experience suitable for all levels, from students to certified divers and freedivers. This well-equipped training facility provides courses in a wide range of specialties, including Open Water, Advanced Open Water, Rescue Diver, Peak Performance Buoyancy, Night Diver, Adaptive Techniques, and Public Safety training.
Underwater, visibility typically ranges from 15 to over 60 feet, with straightforward navigation due to clear pathways and submerged attractions. Water temperatures fluctuate seasonally; expect cool temperatures in the low 40s at depth during winter, while summer brings considerably warmer water above the thermocline, reaching the mid-80s. The best time to visit is generally from spring through fall for more pleasant conditions. Divers can explore various underwater structures, including the iconic 727 aircraft from the film *US Marshals*. The quarry boasts diverse aquatic life, with highlights such as large schools of rare American Paddlefish (Spoonbill), sizable bluegill, impressive giant catfish, and even rare freshwater jellyfish.
