About this dive site

This dive site, Lake Jocassee, is a vast man-made reservoir located in western South Carolina, maintained by Duke Energy. While the lake itself plunges to over 360 feet, the specified dive site area has a maximum depth of 17 meters, with an average depth of 8 meters, offering diverse exploration. A dedicated diver ramp provides easy access to the water. Underwater navigation can involve exploring submerged natural structures and potentially remnants from pre-inundation, as is common in many man-made lakes, making for unique topography.

The lake's clear freshwater environment supports various temperate fish species. Divers can expect to encounter largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, catfish, crappie, sunfish, and trout among submerged trees and rock formations. While not teeming with exotic marine life, the freshwater ecosystem offers its own charm and subjects for observation and photography.

Lake Jocassee is suitable for year-round diving, though cold water gear is essential, especially at depth, given its deep reservoir nature. The visibility, ranging from 20 to over 50 feet at depth, makes it a consistently good freshwater dive. It's an excellent location for skill progression, from basic open water to deep and cold water specialty training. Freedivers will also appreciate the depth and clarity for training.
