This dive site, Keauhou Bay, is globally renowned for its extraordinary manta ray encounters, particularly at Manta Village, located directly in front of the Sheraton Kona Resort & Spa. The tradition began in the 1970s when the Kona Surf Hotel's floodlights inadvertently attracted plankton, which in turn drew large congregations of filter-feeding manta rays. Divers and snorkelers typically observe the mantas circling and feeding in the illuminated waters, a relatively static and easy navigation experience given the shallow depths.
The primary marine life attraction at Keauhou Bay is undoubtedly the majestic manta ray. These gentle giants gather nightly to feed on the concentrated plankton blooms, offering an unparalleled close-up view of their feeding rituals. While other typical bay marine life might be present, the focus of this site is singularly on the manta rays.
Keauhou Bay is best visited in the evening or at night to witness the spectacular feeding of the manta rays under floodlights. It's a once-in-a-lifetime experience perfect for both divers and snorkelers due to its shallow nature. Freedivers will also find it ideal for breath-hold diving with large marine life.
