This dive site, also known as 'Joe and Marys Sink,' features two distinct freshwater sinks located side-by-side in Hernando County, Florida. Contrary to a common misconception, these sinks are not connected. Situated visible from the North side of Hwy 50, about a mile East of the Weeki Wachee intersection of US19 and Hwy 50, it offers a unique, shallow diving experience. There is no specific historical story provided for the naming of the sinks.
The clear waters, when present, allow for observation of typical Florida freshwater aquatic life. Divers and snorkelers may encounter various species of freshwater fish such as largemouth bass, bluegill, and other sunfish. Freshwater turtles and eels might also be seen navigating the sink's structure. The bottom typically hosts an array of aquatic plants and algae, contributing to the ecosystem.
Visibility at Joe's Sink is variable, largely dependent on recent weather conditions and time of year, with an average of around 20ft (6 meters). The best time to visit for optimal visibility is generally during drier periods when less sediment runoff occurs. Given its shallow maximum depth of 9 meters and average depth of 4 meters, this site is exceptionally suitable for beginner divers, snorkelers, and freedivers looking for a calm, overhead-free environment to explore.
