This dive site, Ball and Chain, is one of Key West’s most historic outer reef locations. It gained fame from the old homemade moorings, affectionately known as Bubba Buoys, which were historically used to moor ships off Key West for quarantine purposes. Divers can explore the reef while also keeping an eye out for a unique "Easter egg" related to its distinctive name, hinting at an interesting feature or remnant from its past.
The vibrant reef ecosystem supports a variety of marine animals. Divers and snorkelers frequently encounter large pelagic species such as sharks, turtles, spotted eagle rays, and even dolphins. The reef is also home to numerous species of colorful reef fish and healthy coral formations.
Being a shallow site, Ball and Chain is excellent for divers of all levels, freedivers, and snorkelers. The best time to visit for optimal conditions and marine life encounters is generally year-round in Key West, with warmer, calmer waters often experienced in summer and early fall.
