This dive site, known as Spring Lake and formerly Aquarena Springs, is a unique freshwater spring system managed by The Meadows Center for Water and the Environment. Due to its status as a habitat for protected and endangered species, water access is highly restricted, primarily limited to those enrolled in scuba classes or certified volunteer divers participating in the Center's dedicated diving program. Diving here offers an opportunity to explore a pristine freshwater ecosystem, typically guided by the Center's staff, focusing on conservation and education rather than typical recreational exploration.
Wildlife is abundant in Spring Lake, providing divers with excellent opportunities to observe various freshwater species. Common sightings include numerous turtles, largemouth bass, gar, and a variety of other native freshwater fish. The unique spring environment also supports diverse aquatic plant life, creating a vibrant underwater landscape distinct from marine dive sites.
The consistent temperatures of the spring-fed lake make it a suitable dive destination year-round. The primary highlight for divers is the chance to engage with a vital conservation effort while experiencing a rare and protected aquatic environment. Tips for divers include planning well in advance to join a sanctioned class or the volunteer program, as spontaneous recreational diving is not permitted. This site is particularly well-suited for beginner divers due to its shallow depths and controlled environment, and for those interested in freshwater ecology and conservation.
