About this dive site

This dive site, Alligator Reef Sanctuary Preservation Area (SPA), is a prominent bank reef located northwest and southeast of Cheeca Rocks. It acts as an ecological bridge between the shallow reefs of the Upper Keys and the deeper systems of the Middle Keys. Underwater, divers will explore a well-defined spur-and-groove system, a vibrant reef crest, and a portion of the northeast rubble ridge, offering diverse topography for exploration.

The reef is teeming with marine life, boasting 186 identified fish species. Divers can expect to encounter an array of creatures including moray eels, lobsters, various grouper, nurse sharks, and sea turtles. Alligator Reef is also a significant coral out-planting site, showcasing ongoing conservation efforts and healthy coral growth.

Alligator Reef is ideal for year-round diving, with the summer months often providing the calmest conditions. Its shallow depths make it perfectly suited for beginner divers, snorkelers, and freedivers alike, offering ample bottom time and excellent natural light for photography. Look for active marine life around the spur-and-groove formations and keep an eye out for larger pelagics in the slightly deeper rubble ridge.
