This dive site, located at Capernwray Dive Centre, offers a unique underwater experience within a former limestone quarry. The lake itself is a freshwater environment with a fascinating history as an industrial site. Divers can explore a range of submerged structures, including numerous wrecks of various types – from small boats like harbour minesweepers to larger vessels such as a Hawker Siddeley 748 passenger airplane. The area also includes intriguing artificial features like a Gnome garden and the imagined resting places of historical figures like Lord Lucan and Shergar, alongside the wreck of "Thunderbird".
The dive depths vary considerably, ranging from 6 meters to a maximum depth of 20 meters. Divers can choose between exploring the old quarry route for a gentle descent or venturing towards drop-off points where freshwater mussels may be found on the walls. The lake is home to a diverse fish population, including trout, perch, roach, pike, and even sturgeon – many of which are substantial in size.
Entry into the water can be accomplished via a ‘giant stride’ from the pier or by descending through a slipway located on either side of the jetty. Enjoyable dives can be undertaken as a pleasure dive or with guided instruction.
