This dive site, Kichwani, is located at Mnemba Island, Tanzania and is known for its vibrant and healthy coral reef ecosystem. The reef starts near the surface and extends to a depth of 30 meters, although the commonly dived portion is 18 meters. Navigation is relatively straightforward, following the reef's contours. There is a glassfish shelter at 25 meters which adds to the intrigue of this beautiful site.
Marine life is abundant here. You can spot a wide variety of reef fish, including pufferfish, butterflyfish, and the rare frogfish. Larger species such as Napoleon wrasse and Jackfish are often seen on the outer edge of the reef, while dolphins occasionally grace the waters. The reef itself is rich with hard and soft corals in diverse colours, providing ample habitat for the small marine life that inhabits this area.
The best time to visit Kichwani is during the dry season (June to October), when visibility is typically excellent, and the waters are calm. For freedivers, the shallower parts of the reef offer ample opportunities for exploration, and the clarity of the water makes for an incredible freediving experience. Divers should note that while currents are generally mild, it's always advisable to check conditions with local dive operators before embarking on a dive.
