Zigeunerplätzli, Walchwil, is a freshwater lake dive site on Lake Zug in Switzerland, easily accessible from the shore. Divers can reach it via the Seestrasse towards Arth, parking in a designated area shortly after Oberwil, located before a small forest in a left-hand curve on the right side of the road. Several trails wind through the woodland to a gravel beach, which can be slippery when wet, so caution is advised.
The site offers a tranquil lake environment, suitable for both scuba and freedivers. The left side of the bay is relatively shallow, while the more challenging dive area is found on the right. After traversing a seagrass bed at approximately 10-12 meters, immediately after a diving platform, an interesting wall emerges. Scattered branches along the lakebed provide shelter for juvenile fish. Divers can expect to observe typical freshwater fish such as perch, pike, burbots, and trout, depending on the season and luck. Other aquatic life, including smaller fish, crustaceans, and submerged vegetation, also contribute to the site's biodiversity.
While lacking historical wrecks or complex underwater topography, Zigeunerplätzli is ideal for a relaxing lake experience. The best time to visit is generally during warmer months for more comfortable conditions, though cold water gear is essential year-round due to the lake's temperature. Divers should always be mindful of water temperature and potential variations in visibility.
