Fischbalmen, also known as Fischbalme, is a prominent shore dive in Switzerland, renowned for its dramatic underwater topography and impressive steep wall. This near-vertical rock face plunges over 100 meters into the dark, cold depths of Lake Thun, with sections that are partly overhanging, offering various cracks and ledges to explore. Access is convenient via stairs, and underwater navigation primarily involves following this dramatic wall, which is the main attraction.
Despite its name, which translates to 'Fish Balm' or 'Fish Crags', the site's primary focus isn't on an abundance of fish. However, divers can still encounter typical freshwater species inhabiting the crevices and ledges, including eels, pike, bullheads, and burbot. The site is particularly appealing for divers who appreciate dramatic wall diving and is excellent for depth training for freedivers.
The best time to visit is typically late spring to early autumn for warmer surface temperatures, though specialized drysuit diving is common year-round. Visibility is often excellent, particularly in winter. Divers should be mindful of depth limits and maintain good buoyancy control due to the significant drop-off.
