This dive site, Roque del Oeste, is a captivating islet forming part of the pristine Chinijo Archipelago Marine Reserve. Dives typically involve exploring the dramatic volcanic topography, characterized by walls, ledges, and rocky formations that descend to sandy bottoms. There is no complex history or specific story behind the dive site, rather its allure comes from its untouched natural state and its role as a vibrant marine sanctuary.
The clear Atlantic waters surrounding Roque del Oeste are teeming with a diverse array of marine life. Divers can expect to encounter large schools of barracudas, groupers, moray eels, and various bream species. Keep an eye out for pelagic visitors like common stingrays and the elusive angel sharks, especially during cooler months. The rocky reefs are also home to a variety of macro life, including crabs, nudibranchs, and colourful sponges.
The site is suitable for diving year-round, although the warmer months from June to October offer the most comfortable water temperatures and often calmer surface conditions. Due to its exposed location, currents can be variable, sometimes offering exciting drift opportunities. It's an excellent location for underwater photography, particularly for wide-angle shots of the dramatic landscapes and encounters with larger marine life.
