Roncadores del Palmar, located in Palm Mar, is a classic Tenerife dive site renowned for its spectacular volcanic underwater landscape and abundant marine life. Divers can explore a captivating maze of dramatic cracks, crevices, impressive arches, and swim-throughs within the rocky walls. The dive typically begins on a plateau before descending into an amphitheater structure, with depths ranging from 6 to 24 meters.
The site is most famous for the enormous, dense shoals of roncadores (bastard grunts) that give the site its name and often surround divers, gracefully floating in mid-water and offering excellent photographic opportunities. Beyond the roncadores, the diverse marine life includes tiger moray eels, dark morays, prawns, trumpet fish, anemones, wide-eyed flounder, and big eyes seeking shelter amongst the rocks. Smaller schools of barracuda are also often seen hovering above. The rocky formations themselves support a variety of smaller invertebrates and algae, providing ample opportunities for macro photography.
Generally characterized by calm conditions and gentle diving, Roncadores del Palmar is suitable for all experience levels, including freediving. While accessible, proper buoyancy control is essential to avoid damaging the delicate ecosystem. The best time to visit is during the warmer months, from spring to autumn, when water temperatures are more comfortable and visibility is generally better. Divers should always be mindful of depth limits and potential changes in current conditions.
