This dive site is located about 1.5 miles east of Portlligat, near the Illa Messina, a submerged mountain featuring a 40m long rocky canyon. The dive site itself ranges from 12-25 meters, making it suitable for intermediate divers. Navigation is relatively straightforward, following the canyon's path. The area is known for its rich biodiversity and stunning underwater scenery.
Marine life is plentiful here, with groupers, dentex, conger eels being commonly sighted. The canyon walls are covered with colorful gorgonians, providing a visually captivating backdrop. Schools of flying fish can also be spotted, adding to the diversity.
The best time to visit Illa Messina is likely during the warmer months (May-October) when visibility is at its peak and water temperatures are more comfortable for diving and freediving. Divers should be mindful of depth, maintaining appropriate air supply. Freedivers should plan their dives accordingly considering depth and no significant currents are reported.
