This dive site is Malpique: Torre de Malpique, located on the picturesque island of La Palma, Spain. It is widely regarded as the most stunning dive site on the island, offering a dramatic and spectacular wall dive experience. Divers begin their journey through the open blue waters to reach an impressive underwater tower, which is richly covered with a vibrant display of black coral. The return route often navigates through an impressive natural arch, showcasing the diverse and captivating underwater topography of the site.
The marine life at Malpique is diverse and appealing. The sandy bottom adjacent to the wall serves as an attractive habitat for various types of rays, providing excellent opportunities for sightings. Furthermore, during the autumn months, there is a notable chance to spot graceful mobula rays, adding to the site's allure. The rock formations and wall are home to an abundance of yellow sponges and the famous black corals, which are a highlight for many divers.
The prime time to visit Malpique for the best chance of encountering mobulas is during the autumn season. Given its maximum depth of 33 meters and suitability primarily for experienced divers, excellent buoyancy control and thorough dive planning are essential. While it is predominantly a scuba diving destination, experienced freedivers may also find the challenging depths, striking wall, and unique arch formations to be an exceptionally rewarding experience.
