This dive site, Faro de Fuencaliente, is located near the lighthouse at Fuencaliente on the island of La Palma in the Canary Islands. Access is from the shore in a shallow area characterized by fascinating volcanic formations resulting from the Teneguia eruption. Navigation is relatively straightforward with a variety of dive routes catering to different skill levels and preferences, allowing for exploration of both shallow and deeper areas. The site's unique volcanic topography creates a captivating underwater landscape.
The diverse marine life is a highlight, with benthic species abundant in the shallower areas. Moving into deeper zones, divers can encounter schools of barracudas and jackfish. Smaller inhabitants, ideal for macro photography, are also plentiful amongst the volcanic rock and sand. The variety ensures something for every diver, from macro enthusiasts to those seeking larger pelagic encounters.
The best time to visit is during the spring and summer months (April to October) when the water is warmest and visibility is generally excellent. Calm conditions are more common during these months, making for more pleasant dives, especially for beginner divers. Freediving is also excellent in these calmer waters. Be aware of potential mild currents even during calm weather.
