This dive site, known as Cuevas de la Luz (The Cave of Light), is one of Ibiza's most celebrated and well-regarded underwater experiences. Nestled beneath the impressive cliffs of the pristine Aubarca Bay, between the municipalities of Sant Joan de Labritja and Sant Antoni de Portmany, it offers a captivating cavern dive. Divers navigate through naturally formed rock structures within the illuminated cave system, where light penetration creates an ethereal atmosphere. There is no specific historical narrative provided, but its natural beauty makes it a timeless attraction.
Inside the cave, divers are treated to a diverse array of marine invertebrates, including vibrant feather duster worms, elegant cylinder anemones, and various actinia species, perfect for macro photography enthusiasts. Uniquely, shoals of common dolphinfish are occasionally observed within the Cave of Light, providing an exciting encounter with larger pelagic species.
The Cave of Light is best explored during calm sea conditions, which ensure optimal visibility and safe boat access. With a maximum depth of 19 meters and an average depth of 9 meters, it is suitable for intermediate divers comfortable in cavern environments. Freedivers will also find the site appealing, offering a chance to explore the unique illuminated spaces with breath-hold diving techniques, requiring good buoyancy control and an appreciation for cavern diving.
