This dive site presents the wreck of ‘His Netherlands Majesty's Ship Bato’, a historic Dutch warship dating back to 1806. Located off Long Beach, Simon’s Town, South Africa, this imposing vessel sank during the Battle of Blaauwberg and is now protected by legislation. The ship, originally an 800-ton vessel with 74 guns, served as a floating battery before its demise.
The wreck rests in shallow waters, averaging around 3 meters depth with a maximum depth of approximately 4 meters. It’s characterized by significant seaweed and invertebrate growth, obscuring much of the original wooden structure. The area is primarily sand with some low sandstone reef to the south. While the wreck lies parallel to the shoreline, it's difficult to discern its full form due to this extensive marine overgrowth.
Visibility is generally good owing to the shallow waters and natural light conditions, though the subject matter of a heavily overgrown shipwreck may limit photographic opportunities. The dive offers a glimpse into maritime history and provides habitat for various invertebrates and occasionally some fish. The ship’s cannon are reportedly visible outside the Simon's Town Post Office.
