This dive site features the Porpoise, a sunken tugboat that rests upright on the seabed at a maximum depth of 25 meters (80-90 feet). Located directly opposite Maho Beach and the airstrip, it serves as a prominent artificial reef. The wreck is largely intact, providing an interesting structure for divers to explore its exterior and potentially some accessible areas, offering a unique historical element to the dive.
The Porpoise wreck acts as a magnet for diverse marine life. Divers can frequently encounter stingrays and impressive eagle rays gliding by, and there's a chance to spot the occasional grey shark. Barracudas are often seen patrolling the wreck, alongside various other pelagic species that cruise the open water around the site, complemented by general reef fish and corals.
The best time to visit this dive site is generally year-round, as Sint Maarten offers consistent tropical diving conditions. The site is suitable for experienced freedivers due to its accessible average depth of 12 meters, but scuba diving allows for a more thorough exploration of the wreck's deeper sections. Divers should bring a dive light for peering into potential crevices and be mindful of entanglement hazards common with wreck diving.
