This dive site, "Ilhéu de Vila Franca - cozinha," is nestled within the protected nature reserve of the islet of Vila Franca do Campo, off the coast of Portugal. Divers can navigate along a distinctive wall, exploring numerous passages that extend to a depth of approximately 10 meters. The bottom transitions to small rock formations intermixed with sand, with a maximum depth reaching 17-18 meters. The site offers a captivating underwater journey through a well-preserved marine environment.
The marine life here is abundant, particularly focusing on smaller reef inhabitants. Species commonly spotted include the vibrant Canary Damsel, schooling Salema, and various wrasses like the Rainbow wrasse and Ornate Wrasse. The rocky areas are home to arzores Chromis, Rock-pool Blenny, Rusty blenny, and the distinct Redlip Blenny. Divers might also encounter the well-camouflaged Red scorpion fish and Madeira rockfish, adding to the site's rich biodiversity.
The best time to visit this dive site would generally align with the calmer summer months in the Azores, offering optimal conditions for exploring its features and marine inhabitants. Its relatively shallow average depth of 8 meters makes it an ideal spot for both beginner scuba divers to gain experience and for freedivers to enjoy extended bottom time exploring the passages and rock formations. Snorkelers will also find the protected, shallow waters and visible marine life highly rewarding.
