This dive site is the Hermenegildo Capelo, one of four decommissioned Portuguese Navy ships sunk to create the Ocean Revival Underwater Park. The wreck sits at a maximum depth of 30 meters, offering a unique and exciting dive experience. Navigation is relatively straightforward, following the wreck's structure, but divers should be aware of potential currents and maintain buoyancy control to avoid damaging the delicate artificial reef ecosystem. The site's history is tied to the naval heritage of Portugal, transforming former warships into thriving underwater habitats.
Marine life is abundant around and within the wreck. Conger eels, sea bream, and golden bream are commonly sighted, along with numerous other fish species attracted to the artificial reef. The structure itself provides shelter for a variety of invertebrates and smaller organisms, making it a rich site for both macro and wide-angle photography. Divers can expect to see a vibrant array of marine flora and fauna thriving around the wreck.
The best time to visit is during the warmer months (May-October), when visibility is typically better and the water is warmer. While this site is not ideal for freediving due to its depth and the potential for currents, experienced divers will find it a rewarding and memorable dive. Careful navigation is essential, especially when penetrating the wreck, and divers should maintain proper buoyancy to avoid disturbing the marine environment. Appropriate dive training and experience are recommended, especially for wreck penetration.
