This dive site is Garajau, the most popular dive site on Madeira Island, located approximately 100 meters offshore. The seabed is sandy with large rock formations creating ideal habitat for Dusky groupers. Navigation is straightforward, with the rock formations providing clear landmarks. The site is easily accessible from shore by car or by boat, offering convenience for divers of all skill levels.
Marine life is abundant at Garajau. The Dusky grouper is the star attraction, with frequent sightings almost guaranteed. Rays are also common. Barracuda and other pelagic species are frequently encountered. The rocky formations support a variety of smaller fish and invertebrates, although macro life might not be as prolific as other locations.
The best time to visit Garajau is during the spring and summer months (April-October) when the water is warmest and visibility is typically at its best. For freedivers, the relatively calm conditions and shallow depths make it an excellent site. Divers should be mindful of potential surge near the rocks, especially in stronger currents. Good buoyancy control is essential to avoid damaging the seabed and disturbing the marine life.
