This dive site, Oslob, located in the Philippines, is world-renowned for its whale shark encounters, a practice initiated by local fishermen and guides over 15 years ago to attract tourists. However, it is also highly controversial due to the intensive daily feeding of these majestic creatures, altering their natural migratory patterns and behavior. The site primarily consists of shallow, calm waters where these interactions occur.
The main draw here is undoubtedly the whale sharks (Rhincodon typus), which are reliably present due to the feeding. Unfortunately, this practice has documented negative consequences on the broader marine fauna, impacting the natural ecosystem and potentially reducing the diversity and health of other reef fish and invertebrates that would naturally inhabit such an area.
While whale sharks are present year-round due to the continuous feeding, responsible divers are strongly advised against supporting this industry due to the ethical and ecological concerns. If visiting independently, be aware of dense crowds and boat traffic. The shallow depths make it suitable for snorkelers and freedivers, but true natural diving experiences are compromised.
