This dive site, Mathilda Bay, is named after its long-time resident green turtle, Mathilda. The site features a central shallow slope with a lagoon-like appearance, bordered by distinct walls to both the north and south. Divers typically navigate by exploring the area between these walls and around various small reef blocks scattered on the sandy bottom, offering a relaxed and easy dive experience.
Mathilda Bay is particularly renowned for its exceptional macro life. Among the reef blocks, divers can discover a variety of scorpionfishes and different species of shrimps. For those with a keen eye, the rare pegasus fishes can be spotted on the sand at approximately 8 meters depth. Of course, the star attraction is Mathilda, the green turtle, often seen gracefully swimming through her home.
This dive site is ideal for beginner divers, underwater photographers focusing on macro subjects, and also suitable for snorkelers and freedivers due to its shallow depths. The best time to visit for optimal conditions, including good visibility and calm seas, aligns with the Philippines' dry season, generally from November to May.
