About this dive site

Chocolate Island, a small rocky outcrop nestled between Maya and Malapascua, offers a rewarding open water experience suitable for divers of all levels, from beginners to experienced explorers, as well as snorkelers and freedivers. The underwater topography features a gentle slope descending from the island's walls to a maximum depth of 17 meters, making navigation straightforward by following the reef contour.

This site is particularly celebrated as a haven for macro photography enthusiasts. The entire slope is lavishly carpeted with an abundance of soft and leather corals, creating a vibrant and intricate ecosystem. This rich coral garden provides a perfect home for a diverse array of small marine life, including numerous species of colorful nudibranchs, various types of shrimps, and interesting crabs, offering endless discovery for meticulous divers.

Visibility is generally excellent, especially during Malapascua's dry season from December to May, when sea conditions are typically calmer and optimal for underwater exploration. While there isn't a specific historical narrative, the name "Chocolate Island" likely alludes to the appearance of its rock or coral formations. With its manageable depths and gentle conditions, it's an excellent location to immerse oneself in a thriving marine environment.
