This dive site explores the historic wreck of the Z2 Georg Thiele, a German destroyer that played a significant role in both battles of Narvik in April 1940. After sustaining damage, she was intentionally run aground in the Rombak fjord, where parts of the wreck are still visible from the surface. Divers can navigate the wreck by starting deep, with the stern resting at 52 meters (though the maximum dive depth for the site is 43 meters), and slowly ascending along its structure, exploring the many intricate details it offers.
While specific marine species are not detailed, Norwegian wrecks like the Z2 Georg Thiele typically host a variety of cold-water marine life. Divers can expect to encounter local fish species such as cod and pollock, as well as various invertebrates including anemones, sponges, and crabs that colonize the wreck's structure, creating a vibrant artificial reef.
The best time to visit this dive site is when conditions allow for good access and minimal surface chop. A key highlight is the excellent visibility usually found below 20 meters, enhancing the exploration of the wreck's historical details. Divers should be experienced in deep, cold-water wreck diving. Due to its depth and the nature of wreck diving, it is not suitable for snorkeling or general freediving.
