This dive site, known as Blauwe meer (Blue Lake), is a former sand quarry that now serves the local limestone factory, nestled within the Leggelerveld nature reserve. Its name likely stems from the unusually special color of its water. Underwater navigation is straightforward due to its shallow nature, though the substrate is primarily sand from its quarry origins. The unique water composition contributes to the almost complete absence of aquatic life.
Due to the specific composition of the water, there is virtually no marine life present in the Blauwe meer. Divers should not expect to encounter fish, plants, or other aquatic organisms typically found in freshwater environments.
The best time to visit this dive site would generally be outside of the busy summer months, as crowds can significantly reduce visibility further. It's primarily a training or practice site rather than a destination for rich marine encounters. For divers, it offers a controlled, shallow environment for skill refinement, while freedivers might find the limited depth suitable for static apnea practice, though the lack of visual interest might deter others.
