This dive site, MUSA & Manchones Reef, offers a unique blend of natural coral formations and art, being home to one of the three galleries of the MUSA (Museo Subacuático de Arte), Cancun's famous underwater museum. The museum hosts nearly 500 sculptures, which serve as artificial reefs, promoting coral growth and attracting marine life. Navigation around the site is relatively easy due to its shallow depths, allowing visitors to leisurely explore the fascinating sculptures and natural reef.
The Manchones Reef portion itself supports a variety of coral species, contributing to the site's biodiversity. Around the MUSA sculptures, divers and snorkelers can expect to encounter numerous reef fish, various crustaceans, and potentially even turtles, as the artificial structures provide shelter and new habitats, fostering a thriving ecosystem within the marine park.
The best time to visit Cancun for diving is generally during the dry season, from December to April, although the site is accessible year-round. While it's suitable for snorkeling, the site can be crowded, and the compulsory wearing of a floating vest might detract from the experience for some. For divers and freedivers, the combination of art and nature offers a memorable, shallow dive.
