This dive site features the wreck of the Mama Viña, a ferry-style ship deliberately sunk to create an artificial reef. The wreck lies at a maximum depth of 27 meters, offering a unique opportunity for exploration. Divers can fully tour the wreck, including its interior, as it remains in good condition with no restrictions on penetration. Its relatively compact size allows for a complete tour within typical bottom times.
Beyond the fascinating structure of the wreck itself, the Mama Viña is home to abundant marine life. The artificial reef attracts a variety of fish species, including schools of snapper and grunts, as well as barracudas, groupers, and moray eels finding shelter within the wreck. Corals and sponges have begun to colonize the wreck's surfaces, providing a habitat for smaller invertebrates.
The best time to visit Mama Viña is generally during the dry season (November to May) when weather conditions are stable and water visibility is optimal. Divers should possess good buoyancy control, especially for wreck penetration. Freedivers with sufficient experience can also explore the shallower parts of the wreck, while scuba divers can enjoy the full tour and interior exploration.
