This dive site features the Ex Buque Suchiate Wreck, the former SUCHIATE BI-05 naval vessel, which was intentionally sunk on March 15, 2024, to serve as an artificial reef. The top of the ship rests at approximately 12 feet (3.6 meters) of water, while its deepest point is around 50 feet (15.2 meters), with a maximum depth of 16 meters. As a purpose-sunk vessel, navigation around the exterior is generally straightforward, making it an accessible wreck for divers.
The dive site is located in the biodiverse Sea of Cortez, known for its abundant marine life. A substantial ecosystem has rapidly developed on the initial artificial reef projects in the area and is already transferring to this new wreck by August 2024. Divers can anticipate encountering various species of reef fish, moray eels, crustaceans, and schooling fish. With time, larger pelagic species such as rays and even sea lions are expected to become regular visitors to the site.
The best time to visit the Sea of Cortez generally spans from May to November, offering warmer waters and excellent visibility, though diving is possible year-round. This site is particularly well-suited for underwater photography, allowing for both wide-angle shots of the wreck and close-ups of the rapidly developing macro life. Its shallow depth and accessible features make it an ideal destination for beginner divers, snorkelers, and freedivers alike.
