About this dive site

This dive site, Cenote Maravillas, offers an extraordinary experience for advanced divers in a unique underwater environment. Known for its stunning geological formations, including stalactites and stalagmites, divers navigate through clear freshwater before encountering a distinct hydrogen sulfide cloud around 28 meters. While not having a documented history or story, its natural formation provides a captivating geological adventure.

The marine life here is distinct from open ocean dives, primarily consisting of specialized cave dwellers. Divers might observe unique freshwater species such as remipedians, small cave fish, and freshwater shrimp. The extensive root systems of the surrounding jungle trees often penetrate the cenote, adding to the unique visual tapestry.

The best time to visit Cenote Maravillas is during the dry season (November to April) when light beams often penetrate the water, creating spectacular visual effects. Divers should be advanced certified, comfortable with cavern diving, and possess excellent buoyancy control, especially near the hydrogen sulfide layer. Bringing a dive light is essential to fully appreciate the intricate formations.
