About this dive site

This dive site, Cenote El Pit, is renowned for its deep, clear waters and spectacular geological features. Located in the heart of Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula, it offers a unique diving experience down to 31 meters. Divers navigate through mesmerizing rock and speleothem formations, illuminated by dramatic light entries from above. A distinct hydrogen sulfide cloud at depth adds to the otherworldly atmosphere, while a strong halocline creates a surreal visual effect between fresh and saltwater layers. The site is characterized as a deep dive, but not an overhead cave environment, making it accessible for advanced open water divers with proper training.

While not abundant in marine life, the cenote occasionally hosts small freshwater fish and other aquatic creatures, particularly in the shallower zones. The primary draw for this site, however, is not its biodiversity but rather its stunning geological formations, the captivating light shows, and the unique natural phenomena like the halocline and H2S cloud. Remains of Ice Age mammals have also been discovered here, adding a historical and paleontological dimension to the dive.

Cenote El Pit is best visited during midday when the sun is directly overhead, allowing for the most spectacular light beams to penetrate the depths. Divers are advised to use boots for the potentially slippery steps leading down to the entry point. Its depth and unique conditions make it very suitable for freedivers seeking a challenging and visually rewarding experience. This cenote is a must-see for divers passionate about geological wonders and unique underwater landscapes.
