This dive site, Xatt l’Ahmar (Red Bay) in Malta, is a shallow and easily accessible bay ideal for introductory and training dives. The underwater topography is relatively simple, consisting of a shallow reef, sandy patches, and large boulders, making navigation straightforward even for inexperienced divers. The bay's shallow nature and abundance of natural light create a welcoming and colorful environment.
Marine life in Xatt l’Ahmar is diverse, although not abundant in large pelagic species. Divers and snorkelers can spot baby octopuses, small morays eels, sea urchins, and numerous wrasses amongst the reef's crevices. Underneath the boulders, slipper lobsters and giant scorpionfish are frequently encountered. The Posidonia fields, common in the Mediterranean, add to the underwater biodiversity.
The best time to visit Xatt l’Ahmar is during the warmer months (May to October) when the water is calm and visibility is at its best. Freedivers will appreciate the clear waters and shallow depths, allowing for extended exploration. Divers should pay attention to the potential for small crevices and rocky areas when navigating the boulders. Proper buoyancy control is essential to avoid damaging the fragile ecosystem.
