This dive site presents an intriguing artificial reef created from a former oil tanker. Located near the small bay of Wied Iz-Zurrieq, Malta, it’s accessible via a 7-minute swim from the entry point. The wreck served as a transport vessel between Libya and Italy before experiencing significant technical difficulties in 1995. Following these issues, it was moved to dry dock in Malta where, tragically, an explosion occurred within one of its tanks, resulting in multiple fatalities among shipyard workers. Subsequently, a review determined the tanker had been adequately amortized. In 1998, authorities decided to intentionally sink the vessel to establish a new artificial reef and provide a unique diving experience. The wreck now lies relatively close to shore, offering divers an opportunity to explore a site with a compelling history.
