About this dive site

This dive site, Gozo’s Blue Hole, is Malta's most renowned diving and snorkeling spot, a natural circular pool approximately 16 meters deep, dramatically carved into the surrounding limestone rock. Divers typically enter through a natural archway at the base of the hole, leading directly into the open Mediterranean Sea. It's a geological marvel, formed over millennia, rather than having a specific historical narrative, offering a unique and visually stunning underwater entry point before exploring the vibrant adjacent reefs.

The Blue Hole and the nearby Coral Gardens are teeming with typical Mediterranean marine life. Divers and snorkelers can expect to encounter various fish species such as damselfish, wrasse, bream, and often spot small groupers or moray eels nestled in the rocky crevices. The multi-leveled seabed of the Coral Gardens is adorned with diverse corals, sponges, and anemones, providing a rich habitat for macro life and numerous invertebrates.

This iconic location is a must-do for any visitor to Malta, highly suitable for both scuba diving and snorkeling due to its exceptional clarity and typically calm, sheltered waters. The best time to visit is from spring through autumn, when the sea is usually at its warmest and calmest, ensuring the best conditions for exploration. Freedivers will particularly appreciate the varying depths within the hole and the stunning underwater topography, making it an excellent all-around aquatic adventure.
