This dive site is located in a region with significant wartime history. It marks the location of three Merchant Tankers – the Kolusei Maru, Hiyori Maru and Higane Maru – which were tragically sunk by torpedoes from the American submarine USS Hammerhead in 1944. These vessels now rest on the seabed, forming an artificial reef that has become a thriving habitat. Sadly, these ships have recently been salvaged, leaving behind only scattered remains of steel and scrap metal. Despite this loss, the site offers a remarkable diving experience. The surrounding area is home to diverse marine life, including schools of barracuda and snapper, as well as large pelagic fish. You might also encounter eagle rays, huge marble rays, and giant groupers sheltering amongst the wreck’s remains. Be aware that over 128 passengers and crew perished during this event. The dives are typically conducted in dark blue waters, creating an eerie atmosphere. Keep a watchful eye for predatory tuna and jacks patrolling the depths.
