This dive site, known as LRT Coach Reef, is a unique artificial reef near Tioman Island, Malaysia. It features decommissioned Light Rail Transit (LRT) coaches deliberately submerged in 2024 to create new underwater habitats. Divers can explore the intricate structures of the coaches, offering a distinctive landscape that stands apart from natural coral formations. Navigation involves exploring the various sections and carriages of the sunken coaches.
As the LRT coaches were only recently submerged in 2024, the site is currently in its nascent stage of ecological development. Consequently, there is not yet a significant presence of marine life or established coral growth around the LRT structures. Over time, it is anticipated to attract various fish species and host new coral colonies.
The best time to visit Tioman Island generally aligns with the dry season, from March to October, offering the calmest waters and best visibility. As the LRT Coach Reef is a developing site, divers and freedivers can experience its evolution firsthand. While macro and big animal encounters are limited for now, the site offers an interesting perspective on artificial reef creation and is ideal for wide-angle photography focusing on the unique coach structures. It is suitable for all levels, providing a gentle introduction to artificial reef diving.
