This dive site is Yonara Channel, a dynamic waterway situated between Iriomote Island and Kohama Island in Japan. Spanning 6km long and 500-900m wide, it is renowned for its constant and often very strong currents, making it exclusively a drift dive. Divers typically descend to depths between 9 and 30 meters, navigating the channel's flow which promises exhilarating encounters with pelagic life.
The channel's sandy bottom is interspersed with vibrant coral roots, creating a thriving ecosystem. Divers can expect a high probability of encountering large marine species such as majestic manta rays, various types of cod and rays, elusive catfish sharks, and graceful green turtles. The coral roots themselves are often swarming with schools of sea breams, adding to the rich biodiversity.
The best time to visit the Yonara Channel for optimal manta ray encounters is generally during the summer and autumn months, though diving is possible year-round. Due to the significant currents, this site is recommended for advanced divers who are comfortable with drift diving techniques and managing strong underwater flows. Freedivers with appropriate experience can also find this site rewarding for big animal encounters.
