About this dive site

This dive site, Aharen Beach, is situated on Tokashiki Island within the Kerama Shoto National Park, making it an accessible and well-known spot for snorkeling. Historically lauded as the easiest snorkeling excursion in the park, it offered a vibrant glimpse into Okinawa’s reef life. However, a significant portion of the coral reef is currently closed off with buoys and ropes, and supervised by beach personnel, impacting the previously expansive snorkeling areas. The duration of this closure is unknown.

The marine life at Aharen Beach includes an array of colorful species such as clownfish, butterflyfish, bright corals, and giant clams. Before the closure, hundreds of other marine species were regularly observed, showcasing the rich biodiversity typical of Okinawa’s reefs. While many original photographic opportunities are now within the closed areas, the accessible sections still offer a chance to see some of these smaller reef inhabitants.

The best time to visit Tokashiki Island and Aharen Beach for snorkeling is generally during the warmer months from spring to autumn, when water temperatures are comfortable and visibility is typically excellent. Visitors should be fully aware of the current restrictions at Aharen Beach; it is crucial to respect the marked protected areas and the supervisor's instructions to ensure the preservation of the reef and for personal safety. The shallow depth also makes it very suitable for freedivers looking for easy access and vibrant shallow reefs.
