Scoglio Remaiolo, located off Elba Island in Italy, offers a superb diving experience suitable for all skill levels. The site centers around a prominent rock, with options for both shallow reef explorations and deeper adventures. For Open Water divers, the northward side of the rock is ideal, allowing for easy circumnavigation and observation of schools of small fish evading predators like amberjack, tuna, and snapper. You might also spot barracuda and groupers in these shallower areas.
More experienced divers can explore a rocky ridge that extends southward from the main rock. This path leads to an islet teeming with anthias fish and vibrant red sea fans, eventually descending to depths of over 40 meters (130+ feet) and culminating in an abundance of red gorgonians at approximately 40 to 50 meters or greater. Along the rock face, divers can discover nudibranchs, crustaceans, and other colorful invertebrates.
Visibility is generally excellent, especially during the warmer months (spring, summer, early autumn), when water temperatures are pleasant. While summer offers the best conditions, with good visibility and pleasant water temperatures, winter sees the water cool to around 5°C (49°F) and a diminished marine life population. Currents are a possibility, so a thorough check of weather and current conditions is always recommended before entering the water. Freediving is also possible in shallower areas with caution.
