This dive site features the Madonna del Naufrago, a monumental sculpture immersed in 1979 near Isola dei Cavoli, off the southeastern tip of Sardinia, Italy. This local emblem, submerged at about 11 meters, serves as a memorial to those lost at sea and is celebrated annually in July with flower-covered boats from Villasimius. Navigation is straightforward, centered around the statue itself, surrounded by rocky habitats.
The surrounding rocky areas are rich in marine life, particularly teeming with various fish species typical of the Mediterranean. Divers can expect to see a good variety of smaller reef fish, potentially some crustaceans, and vibrant encrusting corals and sponges covering the rock formations and the statue itself, creating an attractive ecosystem.
The best time to visit this site is during the warmer months, especially around July when the annual commemoration takes place, adding a unique cultural dimension to the experience. Its shallow depth and abundant fish make it excellent for both scuba divers of all levels, especially beginners, and snorkelers. Freedivers will also find the site highly rewarding due to its manageable depth and visual interest.
